Rotavirus Vaccine for Underprivileged Babies

OVERVIEW:

THE ULTIMATE CULINARY COLLECTION was written and created to fund the vaccination of underprivileged babies aged 3 - 6 months against rotavirus in the Philippines, where the author lives as a British expat.

THE BOOK:

THE ULTIMATE CULINARY COLLECTION is a recipe book which comprises of 100 recipes which have all been personally contributed by 100 executive chefs from 100 of the world's finest hotels and restaurants under brands including, but not limited to, Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, Fairmont, Sofitel, Raffles, JW Marriott, and many more. Chefs from independent properties such as Nihi Sumba in Indonesia, voted best hotel in the world 2016 & 2017, and many Michellin-Starred restaurants have also contributed.

With fish & seafood, poultry & game, meat, vegetarian and dessert recipes, there is something for everyone.

THE CAUSE:

In the Philippines, 3,500 children under the age of five die each year from rotavirus. The vaccine is no longer subsidised by the government, and many poorer families do not have the funds to pay for the vaccination of their babies. The full vaccination requires three rounds of the vaccine, each costing US$50.00.

I have written and compiled this book to raise funds to help at least some of these families get their babies vaccinated. I will be purchasing the vaccines directly from GlaxoSmithKline (Philippines) and distributing them to rural clinics so that they are available for the needy babies when they are required.

THE STORY:

I am a British expat and have been living in the Philippines since 2014. In August 2018, my partner, Grace, and I welcomed our daughter, Sophia into the world. Three months later, we took Sophia to her pediatrician for her first (of three) rotavirus vaccinations. We were a little surprised when we were charged US$50.00 because until that point, all vaccinations had been free of charge.

The pediatrician explained that this particular vaccination is no longer subsidised by the Philippine government (since 2016), and that many babies from the poorer families - especially those in the more rural areas - have to go without. He also explained that around 3,500 children under the age of five die from having contracted rotavirus each year in the Philippines.

I decided to do something to help some of these babies, and that was when The Ultimate Culinary Collection was born.

In December 2018, I started writing to some of the most talented and respected executive chefs all over the world and, one by one, they came forward to offer their support. Almost five months later, the book was completed.
